MEETING

At our next meeting on Monday, February 1,
George Crudo will be sharing tips for preparing and photographing food, including special considerations for using natural light. We'll be applying his tips right away at our next field trip!

George's food images are sold internationally through stock agencies for use in cookbooks, restaurant menus, magazines, and packaging. He is also the Food Photography instructor for the Bryan Peterson School of Photography.

Visit George's web site to see more of his work, including his other specialization of architectural photography.  Click here.

BOARD MEETING
The Oviedo Photo Club will hold a Board Meeting at the Oviedo Library on Sunday, February 7th from 1:30 to 3:30 PM.   All members are invited to attend.
PLAN AHEAD #1
FARMER'S MARKET
 OVIEDO FARMER'S MARKET
SATURDAY, MARCH 5, 2016

Plan ahead!  We will be hosting a booth at the Oviedo Farmer's Market the first Saturday in March, so decide what you would like to display.

Space is a bit more restricted this year, so we are asking that members submit no more than three photographs and we will not be able to accommodate boxed prints.  All photographs should be mounted or framed and ready to hang.

As in prior years, the photographs may be offered for sale or simply displayed to "show off" your work.  Any photograph offered for sale must be marked with a price and the member must be present.

The Oviedo Farmer's Market is held the first Saturday of each month at the Lawton House.
PLAN AHEAD #2
CITY HALL GALLERY
 OVIEDO CITY HALL GALLERY

Plan ahead!  We will be rotating five of the ten City Hall photos out and adding five new photographs in March.

The theme for the five new photographs is "Nature", and should represent nature as seen in the Oviedo area.  Any type of nature photography - birds, animals, plants, landscapes - will be considered if it was photographed in Seminole County and preferably in the Oviedo area.

OUR WEBSITE

You'll notice, when you open our  website (click on the  chicken), a slideshow of photographs by our members.

Is yours there?  If not, it should be.  We'd like every member represented.  A landscape format is preferred, but not mandatory. The preferred dimensions are 900 x 600 pixels (a 3:2 ratio)  but your image can be adjusted if necessary.  Send in your favorite photograph.

PRESIDENT'S  MESSAGE

First, a big thank you to those who braved the cold morning, gave up a day off or took time off from their jobs and came out to take photos of the MLK parade and Family Fun Day.  Yes, to a native Floridian it was cold but it warmed up.  It was a fun event and a beautiful day, and there were hot dogs.  Check out the event gallery to see the photos.

Thank you to those who came to the Zoo, then joined us for lunch at Red Robin and then brought in their photos to share.  We also took advantage of the beautiful kitchen at the Woman's Club and had a mini food photography session after the photo review.

We in the Oviedo Photo Club take some things very seriously and while photography is our top concern, food seems to run a very close second.  We're always taking photos of the food we find before us.

That is if we can see it.  Some of us met for dinner recently and it was so dark in the restaurant the waitress couldn't see the level of coffee in my cup and overfilled it a bit.  I actually pulled out my iPhone flashlight app at one point to see something on the table and then almost blinded Michael S. when I received an important call from my vet.  (Sorry again Michael.)

During the meal one of our members mentioned it took away from enjoying the meal because we eat first with our eyes.  How true that is.  Even our non-food photos can feed a need we, and those who view our photos, have.

Our February speaker, George Crudo, will be teaching us how to expand our food photography skills.  I'm looking forward to seeing how we use what we learn in our personal and event photography.

Our February Field Trip to the De Azúcar Bakeshop is the perfect chance to apply what we learn. We will discover some new foods, photograph them, and, most certainly, eat them.  Then we will share the results at the next photo review.

FIELD TRIP

De Azúcar Bakeshop
150 Alafaya Woods Blvd - #102 - Oviedo FL 32765
Saturday, February 6th -  9:30 AM

At our February 1st meeting George Crudo will present a course in food photography, and we'll have dessert at our February 6th Field Trip.  We'll be going to the  De Azúcar Bakeshop in Oviedo to photograph their pastries, cakes, cupcakes, and other goodies.

De Azúcar Bakeshop is a family-owned business specializing in fresh-baked pastries, desserts, and bread.  Samples will be set up on a table for us to photograph.  You may want to bring your tripod, a reflector, and any other accessories or props that George recommends for food photography.  The table will be set up outside in back of the bakery so we won't disturb their customers or the making of these products.  We will be using natural light, but fill-flash may in order.  Also, we'll be under a tent, so reflectors and/or fill-flash will enhance the photos.

The bakery is a bit difficult to find.  Alafaya Woods Blvd is off Alafaya Trail (SR #434) just south of Mitchell Hammock Road.  There's a Raceway gasoline station on the corner.  Shortly after you turn onto Alafaya Woods Blvd there is a sign on the right for Victory Martial Arts, Perfect Hair, and Bakery.  Turn in there.  There is no large sign on the building, but you'll see the store window.

Please park behind the bakery as a courtesty to the bakery's customers.  We don't want to take up customer parking spaces, and Saturday is a busy day for the bakery.

Photos of the Field Trip should be uploaded to your personal Zenfolio site and then copied to the appropriate Field Trip gallery in Zenfolio.

It is always appreciated if you RSVP, with your mobile number,  that you will participate in a Field Trip so that we will know to expect you.

This is the first Field Trip that Jayne, our new Field Trip Coordinator, has organized but we're sure it will be a good one.  She encourages you to suggest other Field Trip locations.

PHOTO OPS

LYONIA ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER

We have Field Trips and Events where we, as a group, take photographs.  However, there are times we want someplace to go on our own where there are some photographable subjects.

The friendly Florida Scrub Jays are there to pose for you at Lyonia. The photograph here was taken on an Oviedo Photo Club Field Trip in 2014.  That's one of our member's hands.

Lyonia is open 9 AM to 5:30 PM Monday through Thursday, and 9 AM to 5 PM Friday and Saturday. Sunday's hours are 1 PM to 5 PM.  No admission charge.

If you pre-register, there are hikes led by LEC staff on week days. See their website for topics, dates, and hours: Lyonia.  And, of course, directions.
